The livelihoods of millions of people in developing countries are under serious threat from climate change.
They need our help, but the money shouldn’t come from Ireland’s aid budget, according to Trócaire.
‘Don’t let the government play hide & seek with climate finance’ is the message behind Trócaire’s climate change campaign – http://www.trocaire.org/takeaction/climate-change-additionality.
Ireland has agreed to provide €100 million over the next 3 years to help poor countries cope. This help is badly needed.
But the government is still playing hide and seek with this money. Will the money be taken from the overseas aid budget and given a different name? Trócaire wants to make sure it is not!
Ireland’s aid is playing a crucial role in supporting vulnerable people in developing countries to work their way out of poverty. Climate change has created new burdens on people, and must be met with new money.
Please take the Trócaire action asking Taoiseach Brian Cowen and Minister John Gormley to guarantee that Ireland’s climate finance commitments will not be taken from Ireland’s aid budget.
