BOLD Climate Action

Patricia Devin sent us this report:

“BOLD Climate Action was set up by older people who are very concerned about the climate crisis – and the failure of the Irish government to seriously address it.” (Carol- Anne O’Brien)

Just over twelve months ago, Carol-Anne O’Brien gathered some older people from various community A small committee clarified directions for a project, created an identity ‘BOLD Climate Action’ and arranged a series of four events over the Autumn/ Spring term.

The committee pursued support from civil society organisations, including Age Action, Trade Unions through ICTU and so on.  From this outreach, Friends of the Earth Ireland are sponsoring the initial phase of development, with an educational grant and Emma-Jayne Geraghty for liaison and support.

Several Christian churches and organisations, including Eco-congregations, were approached to circulate a flyer to members seeking interest in BOLD Climate Action.  Happily, many people, who attended our first three events came through Eco Congregations.

Fran Brady, of Eco-Congregations Ireland spoke at the November meeting on “Global Climate Justice and Older People in Ireland”.  Fran briefed the meeting on the contribution of Eco Congregations towards climate justice.  In October Clodagh O’Reilly invited a BOLD representative to join in a service on creation at the Church of Saint Therese Mount Merrion, an eco-congregation parish in Dublin.

To date BOLD Climate Action has held three of four events. Themes included the issue of energy poverty for older people in Ireland; the meaning and implementation of ‘Just Transition,’ from a carbon dependent economy and society to sustainable modes and the global impacts of climate change regarding connections between economies and inequality between the rich and poor countries.

The final event in this series will address the issue of “Intergenerational Solidarity”. For more information contact:  [email protected]  Bold Climate Action also has a webpage on the Friends of the Earth Ireland website:https://www.friendsoftheearth.ie/get-involved/join/bold-climate-action/
