The 14th European Symposium for the Protection of the Night Sky

Mayo Dark SkiesMayo Dark Sky Festival this year is holding an extra event for those interested in Biodiversity, Climate Actions, Wellbeing and Dark Sky themes.  This will be of special interest to rural community groups who are interested in seeking dark sky status.  It is the first time the International Dark Sky Association has licensed an event in Ireland also so the organisers expect a good international attendance.  Details are below:

Event Name:   The 14th European Symposium for the Protection of the Night Sky

Venue:  GN Mulranny Park Hotel, Mulranny, County Mayo

Dates:  3rd to 5th November 2019 (immediately following the Mayo Dark Sky Festival weekend)

The programme offers a platform for  research, activism and policy discussions on protecting the night sky featuring:

  • Plenary talks and workshops
  • Research presentations
  • At least 3 invited guest speakers
  • Poster sessions for researchers
  • Field Trip to Mayo International Dark Sky Park
  • Reception and gala event with key speakers

Darkness matters for nature’s cycle of day and night. It’s time to make a change and that’s why academics, activists, architects, astronomers, community groups, conservationists, dark sky advocates, ecologists, engineers, lighting experts, planners, policy makers, scientists, students and more (!) are invited to discuss the challenges and explore the solutions to reversing light pollution and implementing best practices for dark sky friendly lighting.

Mayo Dark Sky Festival Special

For those that register before end of August 2019, included is one FREE Weekend Pass to events taking place at the Mayo Dark Sky Festival from 1st– 3rd November. This is a weekend extravaganza of family friendly events featuring astronomy, science, culture and the environment.
